A Day with the Donkeys: The Donkey Sanctuary, Sidmouth

Part of our days-out series for visitors based in Sidmouth who want to explore further afield.

Some days out are about slowing down. The Donkey Sanctuary’s Sidmouth site is free to enter, peaceful and set in the countryside above the town, which makes it ideal for a relaxed half day, particularly on a gentle morning when you do not want a long drive.

A charity with a Sidmouth story

The Donkey Sanctuary was founded by Elisabeth Svendsen in 1969, after she saw seven donkeys crammed into a small pen at an Exeter market. The charity was registered in 1973, and its base is at Slade House Farm, near Sidmouth. It now cares for thousands of donkeys across the United Kingdom and works in several European countries.

What to expect

According to the charity, entry is free and individual visits need no booking. It is open seven days a week from 9am to 5pm, with last car park entry at 4.30pm. You can meet donkeys around the grounds, wander the gardens and walks, and follow seasonal activity trails. The miniature donkeys at Dawn Barn opened in October 2024, and there are daily talks at 11am and 2pm. Parking is free, and dogs are welcome on leads.

Make it a slow day

Arrive in the morning, time your visit around the 11am talk, then have lunch at The Kitchen restaurant, open from 9am to 5pm. This is a working farm with grass walkways, so wear sensible shoes. Wheelchairs and mobility scooters can be pre-booked, and groups need to book in advance by calling the sanctuary. Please check details with the sanctuary before you travel.
