Spa hotel
The Esplanade, Sidmouth EX10 8RY
Top 5 reasons to stay
One of Sidmouth's grandest addresses, The Victoria sits at the western end of the Esplanade in its own landscaped gardens, looking out across Lyme Bay. Opened in 1904 as one of the town's first purpose-built hotels, it keeps much of its Edwardian character, from the oak panelling to the turret rooms.
This is the place for a proper treat. The Source Spa has heated indoor and outdoor pools, and there is a tennis court and putting green in the grounds. Dinner is in the AA Rosette Jubilee Restaurant, with afternoon tea and Bertie's Bar for quieter moments. Guests regularly single out the food, the friendly staff and the setting.

Seafront hotel
The Esplanade, Sidmouth EX10 8AY
Top 5 reasons to stay
With its grand bowed entrance and Regency frontage, Hotel Riviera is one of the landmarks of the Esplanade. Individually designed bedrooms look out to sea, and the lift serves every floor.
The AA two-Rosette restaurant is known for fresh local seafood, and the afternoon tea is a favourite with visitors and locals alike. Many of the team have been here for more than a decade, and it shows: guests consistently praise the warm, attentive service as much as the view.

Seafront hotel with spa
The Esplanade, Sidmouth EX10 8AZ
Top 5 reasons to stay
Founded in 1807 as the York Hotel, this was Sidmouth's first purpose-built hotel, and it earned the 'Royal' after a visit from the Prince of Wales in 1856. The Hook family has run the Faulkner since 1939 and brought the two hotels together in 1970; three generations on, the family is still very much in charge.
It sits on the corner of the Esplanade and Fore Street, so the beach and the shops are both on the doorstep. There are spa facilities with a sauna and steam room, several lounges, the Faulkner Bar and Blinis Café Bar. Guests describe the service as friendly and traditional, but up to date where it matters.

Seafront hotel
The Esplanade, Sidmouth EX10 8NR
Top 5 reasons to stay
The Bedford began life in 1809 as Wallis's Marine Library and Reading Rooms, one of the first Regency buildings on Sidmouth's seafront, and had become a hotel by 1865. Since 1990 it has been owned by the Pyne family, Devon farmers from nearby Budleigh Salterton.
That farming link shows up on the plate: Pyne's Bar and Restaurant uses produce from the family farm alongside other local suppliers. Rooms are offered with full sea views, partial sea views or inland outlooks, so there is a choice of budgets without leaving the Esplanade.
