Sidmouth Lifeboat keeps watch over this stretch of the Jurassic Coast, and it relies entirely on the generosity of residents and visitors.

An independent lifeboat

Sidmouth Lifeboat is not part of, or funded by, the RNLI. It is an independent charity (registered charity number 1105914) and is fully self-funded. According to the charity, 100% of the money raised is used to keep the boat maintained.

Saving lives since 1968

The modern service began in 1968, when a group of students from the local secondary school formed a surf life saving organisation and patrolled Jacob’s Ladder beach on summer weekends. The first rigid inflatable boat arrived in 1972, and by the late 1970s the service had grown to evening, weekend and eventually 24-hour cover.

Today the charity describes a 25-strong team of boat, shore and tractor crew, supported by more than 20 support members, with two boats and two tractors. Its volunteers cover approximately 150 square miles of sea between Axmouth and Budleigh Salterton, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and it also provides seasonal lifeguards.

How you can help

Donate

Every donation helps keep the boat ready to launch. You can give through the Sidmouth Lifeboat website.

Visit the boathouse shop

Pick up a gift or souvenir from the boathouse shop at the lifeboat station on the Esplanade. Every purchase supports the crew.

Look out for the collection mannequins

Keep some change for the collection mannequins outside the station when you stroll along the seafront.

Come to an event

The lifeboat holds fundraising events through the year. Check the charity’s website for what is coming up during your stay.

Support Sidmouth Lifeboat ↗

Find the station

The Lifeboat Station, The Esplanade, Sidmouth EX10 8BE.
