Born in Torquay, she drew on the bays, hotels and gardens of the south Devon coast for some of her best-known mysteries. If you are staying in Sidmouth and want a day out with a story behind it, the Christie trail is an easy one to follow.

Where Christie’s Devon begins

Christie was born and brought up in Torquay, in a Victorian family home called Ashfield. The house was demolished in the 1960s, but a blue plaque remains on the site. Torquay’s Agatha Christie Mile is a walking route around the town with a printed leaflet, available from the Visitor Information Centre. Along the way are places linked to her life and books, including Torre Abbey, whose gardens feature plants chosen to commemorate her knowledge of poisons.

Greenway, her holiday home

Greenway, near Brixham, was bought by the Christie family in 1938 and is now a National Trust property. Several of her novels are linked to the house, including Dead Man’s Folly, Five Little Pigs, Towards Zero and Ordeal by Innocence. Check opening times and booking requirements with the National Trust before you travel.

Burgh Island, near Bigbury-on-Sea

The Art Deco hotel on Burgh Island is widely regarded as an inspiration for And Then There Were None and Evil Under the Sun, and Christie often visited. A beach house was built on the island as a writer’s retreat and still exists. The island has also appeared on screen: according to Wikipedia, the 2002 television adaptation of Evil Under the Sun was filmed there, as were scenes of the BBC’s 1987 Miss Marple drama Nemesis.

More places for fans

Elberry Cove in Brixham, where Christie swam as a young woman, appears in The ABC Murders. Cockington, near Torquay, is the village where she visited the Mallock family at Cockington Court. Kents Cavern is said to have inspired the caves in The Man in the Brown Suit, and Torquay’s Imperial Hotel appears in Peril at End House and Sleeping Murder under other names.

Sidmouth as your base

We have not found a confirmed Christie connection to Sidmouth, and we do not want to suggest one. The Christie places are on the south Devon coast, which you can reach as a day trip. Sidmouth makes a pleasant, quieter base to return to. You can compare hotels and guesthouses on our Unterkünfte page, and the restaurants on our Taste Sidmouth page are a good way to end the day. If you enjoy filming locations, see also our post on Rosamunde Pilcher country in East Devon.

Details are taken from published tourism and reference sources.
